Take a step back in time at this old-school, low-spray orchard about 20 minutes north of Portland. The place is so pet friendly that it’s no surprise the owners also have their own dog-sitting business. (Good to know!) So, load up on the freshest Mackintoshes and Cortlands before embarking on a “find a gnome” game. Just try to figure out whether Ralphie is tracking down said gnome or a nemesis squirrel before he leads you in the completely wrong direction.

Rufus is more than welcome to tag along at this family-owned orchard that’s been around since 1948. The folks at Aamodts will teach you the ‘right’ way to pick apples, too: 1. Cup the apple in the palm of your hand. 2. Twist the apple up and over the branch. (This method ensures that next year’s bud is undamaged and ready to produce another apple next season.) 3. Pick apples from the tree branches, never off the ground. Oh, and make sure to take home some Thor cider, named after Great Grandpa Aamodt.

Heirloom apple buffs and their pups should make their way to this super special New England orchard. Poverty Lane focuses on planting varieties Pomme Grise and Kingston Black that thrive in their region as well as cider apple varieties grown only for fermentable juice (affected long ago by Prohibition!).
