In this age of wearable tech, where humans are obsessed with tracking their every move, it only makes sense that we’d want to do the same for our pups! So when we came across the new Link AKC collar, we knew we had to take it for a test-drive. Backed by the American Kennel Club, the people who made this exceptionally smart collar know dogs—and they understand every little detail pet parents want to know about their pups (down to whether it’s a degree to hot for them to be outside!)

The high tech, lightweight leather collar connects to an app that allows you to not just map your pup’s location and any adventures they go on, but also tracks their activity level through a proprietary algorithm and makes a daily exercise recommendation. It also has an LED light that you can access remotely from your app for nighttime excursions, temperature alerts you can set, and a virtual scrapbook so you can document all of those outings. We had one of our office pups, Cooper, try it out for a day:

The first big discovery? Cooper’s humans found that she should be getting 48 minutes of moderate activity a day! So she set out on her first walk, mapping her progress on the app.

Next stop? A beach trip. Since the collar is water-resistant up to three feet, her dog dad took her for a dip in the ocean. After swimming and retrieving, Cooper hit her daily activity goal.

At one point, Cooper decided to scamper off to chase after a Scottie—because she went outside the ‘safe zone’ her humans had established, they got an alert! You can also set an alert when your pup is back in their ‘homebase’.

Cooper’s humans created a special album on the app to document their adventures, where they captured the miles she trekked and the number of derp faces she made along the way.
