Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the environmental impact of our daily choices and how we–as individuals and as a company–can do better for our entire planet.
Ollie is excited to announce that we have renewed our Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) membership, this time at the Guardian level. We’re rolling up our sleeves, ready to work together with other PSC members to drive toward more sustainable solutions for our industry.
The Pet Sustainability Coalition is a not-for-profit organization that brings together pet industry producers, suppliers, manufacturers, brands, distributors, and retailers to work towards a more sustainable future for pets and the planet.
Founded in 2013, the PSC has almost 200 members who represent all areas of the pet industry, including food, treats, toys, accessories, and more. The coalition provides resources, tools, and support for members to improve their sustainability efforts.
Some of the key areas the PSC focuses on include sustainable packaging, tracking carbon emissions, reducing waste, and sourcing sustainable proteins. These are major environmental issues that require collaboration and innovation to find solutions that benefit both businesses and the planet. Our Chief Impact Officer will be engaging with PSC on all of these topics, especially sustainable ingredients, via a regular working group of diverse pet industry members.
Driving positive change through ingredient insights
The PSC is empowering pet food brands to make more sustainable choices by partnering with HowGood, the world’s largest database on sustainable food, to help companies understand the environmental impact of their ingredients.
Creating communities that drive change
In 2025, the PSC is expanding to include Packaging and Ingredient Cohorts. These cohorts are a hub for sharing ideas and best practices, accelerating industry innovation, and building powerful partnerships for material impact. Ollie’s Packaging Engineering Manager will be active in the Packaging Cohort.
Acting as a sustainability educational leader
In addition to their signature event, Pet Summit Impact Unleashed, which provides sustainability solutions for businesses in the pet industry, the PSC is creating a robust webinar series for 2025. The series will cover a wide range of topics including ingredients and materials, packaging and waste, and strategy and governance.
The pet food industry is huge, and it’s growing. In fact, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), the pet food and treat sector reached $64.4 billion in sales in 2023—an 10.8% increase from 2022.
As pet parents, we often consider the quality of the food we give to our animal companions—but what about the environmental impact? The truth is that the pet industry has a significant carbon footprint and can contribute to issues like deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.
For example, producing meat-based pet foods requires a large amount of land, water, and energy. With a growing pet population and increasing demand for pet products, it’s essential to find more sustainable ways of operating. That’s why the PSC is so crucial—it unites companies from across the industry to share resources and promote sustainable practices, reducing the overall impact on the environment.
So far, we’ve looked at what the PSC is and why sustainability matters in the pet industry. But why exactly did we decide to join this coalition?
Ollie is a purpose driven brand: We are here to create and deliver the absolute best food for your dog, empower pet parents with resources and diagnostic tools, and to create positive social and environmental impact. And like PSC, we’re solutions-oriented. We believe a better future is possible, and we are not content with the status quo–not for dogs, and not for the planet.
Making our products more sustainable is a key focus for Ollie. In addition to our industry-leading commitment to quality and nutrition, we are beginning to examine the potential environmental impact of the ingredients we choose in order to more sustainable decisions. Beyond ingredients, we’re also evaluating our packaging and internal operations, so that we can work to minimize our climate and waste footprint. To this end, we’re excited to have Ollie members participating in PSC cohorts focused on packaging and ingredients as a way to share insights and learn from peers.
We know that working together with PSC and fellow members will allow us all to learn from one another and have a positive cumulative impact.
As Ollie reaches more pets and their humans, the need to make smart, sustainable decisions grows too.
Joining the PSC is a natural extension of our core values, and we’re excited to join forces with other like-minded companies to drive positive change in the pet industry.
So, stay tuned, and watch this space as we embark on this journey towards a more sustainable future for all. Thank you for being a part of it!
