It’s officially pumpkin spice latte season for humans—but that doesn’t mean your pup can’t get in on the fall flavor. Pumpkin is actually a dog superfood, packed with fiber and high in nutrients like potassium, iron, and vitamins A and C. This nutritious ingredient can even be used to cure a variety of canine digestion issues. We rounded up some of our favorite pumpkin recipes that are as healthy for your pup as they are Insta-worthy.
Topped with a pup-friendly frosting, these apple-flavored doggie doughnuts are packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients like ground flaxseed and cinnamon. The tasty treats also contain whole wheat flour, coconut milk and flax seeds. You’ll want to grab a doughnut pan and spray it with a nonstick cooking spray first to ensure your doughnuts are Instagram worthy when you take them out of the pan.
These pumpkin-flavored treats are drizzled with a bacon and peanut butter glaze (two of pups’ favorite ingredients.) If your pup has an issue with gluten or grains this is a recipe you will want to avoid as the bones are made with whole wheat flour. If you don’t eat bacon you can use chicken fat or coconut oil to make a delicious glaze.
Pumpkin puree and vitamin A-rich carrots make up the base of these cupcakes, which are topped with a peanut butter-flavored yogurt frosting. If you’re not really into baking, these are an ideal choice since the prep time is only 5 minutes. You will need a few minutes while the cupcakes bake to whip up a delicious homemade frosting with peanut butter and Greek yogurt. You can use maple syrup to add some sweetness.
It’s the pup version of the PSL! Skip the Starbucks Puppacino which is just a cup of sugary whipped cream and can lead to weight gain if your pup has too many. Try this treat filled with yogurt, pumpkin, cinnamon, and oats. This version has some nutritional value for your best friend. You can still top this treat off with a little whipped cream (if your dog isn’t dairy-sensitive).
These frozen toppers are a great way to incorporate carrots and ground chia seeds (a great source of omega-3 fatty acids) into your pup’s meals. If your pup likes to snack you can use these as a stand-alone treat! To create these fun toppers try grabbing a cute silicone mold in the shape of a heart, bone or paw.
These tasty snacks combine pumpkin and sweet potato, two fall favorites that are nutrient-dense and loaded with fiber. These can be a little more time consuming to make, especially if you have to cook and cool a sweet potato before mashing it as indicated in the recipe. Pro tip: make some sweet potatoes for your dinner and cook an extra one to use for these treats. This will keep both you and your pup eating well!
Made with blueberries, a pup superfood known for its powerful antioxidants and high vitamin C content, these baked treats can help boost your pup’s immune system. To save on time, skip the cookie cutter and use a pizza wheel to cut the dough into squares. While you might appreciate the cute shapes, your pup doesn’t care as long as these treats get into his mouth ASAP. If you want to use these treats for training, cut smaller bite-sized squares.
These easy, no-bake pumpkin balls are filled with cinnamon and honey, which can help alleviate some doggie allergy symptoms. If your pup has an issue with gluten, be sure to use gluten-free oats. While oats don’t actually contain gluten, they are often processed with wheat which can make dogs (and people) with gluten intolerances or allergies sick.
This icy cool treat is made using just pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and plain yogurt, which is full of probiotics that are great for your pup’s digestive system. If you’re indulging in a sweet treat, make this delicious ice cream so your pup doesn’t feel left out. You can even spoon some into a dish for a sophisticated puppy sundae. Garnish your scoops with a little whipped cream and your pup’s favorite treat on top! Some great topping ideas include chewy training treats, bacon, or even a drizzle of peanut butter.
