Did your pup resolve to drop a few pounds this year? We know, treats don’t exactly scream ‘weight loss,’ but you can still reward your pup—if you use the right ingredients.
Enter these healthy and delicious DIY treats your pup will do tricks for. Made with real food ingredients like pumpkin puree, oats, whole-wheat flour, spinach, and carrots, we found some treats that are packed with protein and fiber (which keep your dog feeling fuller longer). So go ahead and treat your pup guilt-free!
These yummy treats made with simple ingredients like pumpkin puree, spinach, eggs and whole wheat flour will have your pup begging for more. Remember to keep portion sizes reasonable but this is a snack your pup can enjoy even on a weight loss plan.
The carrots in these frozen treats are full of fiber, which can help stave off your pup’s next craving. Additionally these treats are perfect for helping your dog stay hydrated. Whether it is hot and humid or you aren’t sure if your pup is drinking enough water these treats will help add some water to your dog’s diet.
These nutrient dense treats contain pumpkin, peanut butter and oatmeal to keep your pup fuller for longer. Loaded with fresh vegetables your pup will benefit from all of the vitamins and minerals too!
Kale, spinach and oatmeal make this cookie a fiber-filled, nutritious treat that won’t weigh your pup down. Apples add additional fiber and sweetness to this satisfying treat.
Studies have shown that adding Omega-3 fatty acids (like those found in salmon) to a dog’s diet can help promote weight loss. This brittle is a great easy to make treat and it is budget friendly since you can use canned salmon. In addiition to the weight loss benefit the Omega-3 fatty acids can help with healthy skin, coats and joints. So even if your dog is fit and healthy these are a great treat to include in a balanced diet.
Pumpkin strikes again, this time paired with protein-packed peanut butter, which helps your pup retain muscle mass (not fat). You can cut these treats using any cookie cutter you like. Hearts, bones and other seasonal shapes make for a fun and delicious treat for your dog. If you’re pressed for time, one easy time saving hack is to cut these treats into squares with either a pizza cutter or a knife.
Although these treats are made with healthier ingredients, they are still treats. If you are actively working with your vet to help your dog lose weight, check in about which of these treats would be best for your dog. You can also ask about how much your pup can enjoy. This way your pup can indulge and you won’t have to worry about accidentally detailing their diet.
